Adopt TPM for
Manufacturing Excellence : Suresh Krishna
17 February 2004
Calling
upon companies to strive for excellence in their respective fields, Mr
Suresh Krishna, Chairman, TPM Club and Chairman & Managing
Director, Sundaram Fasteners Ltd, said, “Excellence is doing mundane
things consistently well.” Excellence could involve policies like
“cleaning bulbs regularly or picking up the telephone in three
rings.” TPM, he said, helped achieved excellence. He was speaking at
the inaugural session of the 4th TPM National Conference, organized by
the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), TPM Club India and Japan
Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM).
Mr
Krishna stressed the need for training people in TPM, particularly
those in the middle management level. He said that the middle-level
managers were the most difficult to motivate, for they generally
assumed to know everything. “They ask questions like ‘Do you want
us to achieve higher sales, or work on TPM?’ This is like an athlete
asking ‘Do you want me to run fast or breathe’,” Mr Suresh
Krishna said.
He
said “if you are an excellent company, you’ll be like a flower.
The customers will come to you.”
And
in order to become an excellent company he said a CEO of a company
should have a vision - “a vision of where the company should go.”
“This vision need not be of his own but should be of his colleagues,
friends, competitors; and the vision should be 10-15 years ahead,”
he added. “Once there is a vision,” he continued, “it is
important to see the vision.” One will have to communicate, speak
and explain the vision in different languages,” he remarked.
In
the same vein, Mr Krishna said that the vision must not be an
elitist’s vision but should reach out to the lowest rung in an
organization where they must understand where the company was heading.
The
TPM Club Chairman also stressed on setting a realistic target, which
could be achieved. Also he maintained that winning was important and
the goal had to be set by the CEO. He remarked that winning was the
catalyst to achieve further excellence.
On
the prospect of competition from Thailand and China, he urged the
Indian companies to face up to the challenges and see it in the light
of new opportunities. “India has always been great in trading but
now it was time to become a champion of manufacturing excellence,”
he concluded.
Mr
J Srinivasan, Managing Director, TTK LIG Ltd - the winner of award for
TPM excellence for the year 2003, in his presentation pointed out that
TPM was more than just a “Tool”; it is a productivity-improvement
system that drives the entire factory and work force.
He
outlined the benefits in TTK-LIG through TPM and said that there was a
substantial increase in machine productivity, improvement in quality
rate from 92% to 99%, sizeable reduction in manufacturing costs,
reduction in delivery lead time by 40%, development and launching of
15 new products in record time, zero breakdowns and zero accidents,
change in work culture.
He
said that TPM satisfies the requirements of all Stakeholders in
business by achieving business objectives.
Earlier,
Dr Sarita Nagpal, Principal Senior Counsellor , TPM Club India, in her welcome
remarks introduced the theme of the conference and added how by
adopting TPM, more and more Indian companies were achieving
excellence.
