TPM vital in emerging
sectors
The Hindu Business Line, 19 February 2004
"TOTAL Productive Maintenance (TPM) can be used across all industries including the service sector. It is particularly of importance to emerging sectors like hospitals to satisfy the global demand arising from medical tourism as well as from the auto components industry, which has an immense outsourcing opportunity," said Mr Suresh Krishna, Chairman & Managing Director, Sundram Fasteners Ltd, and Chairman, TPM Club.
Mr Krishna was here to attend the fourth TPM National Conference, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, TPM Club India and Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance. He said that in the light of increasing challenges from countries such as Thailand and China, domestic industry has to continuously strive to be competitive.
According to Mr Krishna, TPM is not very different from other management tools like TQM except in the initial stages. "At later stages they become very similar. However, TPM is more suited for manufacturing companies, TQM for service companies and lean management for tight manufacturers".
Mr Krishna said that his company had adopted TPM about eight years ago and there has been a visible transformation since then. "Compared with the investments involved for TPM, the benefits are about 10 to 50 times higher," he said.
