Grease - How Much is Too Much ?

Issue Focus: Controlling Water Contamination

TIP #1

Inspecting used oil filters can be a useful part of the diagnostic process. If the paper is wavy, you may have a problem with water contamination.

TIP #2

Protect new bearings against contamination and condensation. New bearings should be kept in their original wrappings as long as possible and stored away from moisture where the temperature can be kept reasonably constant.

TIP #3

When a mineral oil is clear and bright, the amount of harmful water present will typically be less than 75 ppm.

TIP #4

In a humid environment, condensate can form in rolling element bearings and cause corrosion, leading to a reducted bearing life. With careful choice of the grease lubricant, the effect of the condensed moisture can be reduced. Greases thickened with sodium soap will absorb (emulsify) large quantities of water, but may soften it to such an extent that the grease flows out of the bearing.

Lithium soap greases do not emulsify water, but with suitable additives can provide good protection against corrosion. There are also a number of greases with synthetic thickeners that offer excellent protection against corrosion, prolonging the bearing life.

TIP #5

Water may be dissolved or emulsified in oil. Water affects viscosity, promotes oil degradation and equipment corrosion, and interferes with lubrication. In hydraulic systems air may cause foaming, slow system response and lead to pump cavitation.

TIP #6

Hydrolytic stability is the ability of an oil to resist degradation in the presence of water.
